A young woman going through a divorce finds a kindred soul in a bar one night and wakes up the next morning in his bed. On the opposite side of town, a boring high school teacher is met with a startling confession and an equally unexpected encounter with his family. A lonely girl who lives with a ghostly house guest meets the (living and breathing) man she could be destined to marry, while twin boys who don't quite see eye to eye encounter love and lust in the most unexpected of situations. Take a moment to sit back and watch life through the eyes of these ordinary people, a series of happy-go-lucky days colored by intersecting lines of sex, love, and longing.

OASG - Justin
Combine some of the issues presented in the shorts with Shimura’s aesthetic when it comes to drawing characters (and characters in various positions), Happy Go Lucky Days is not the best manga, but it is one that you can read. Assuming you can deal with some quirks in most…check that, all of the characters.

  Strangely Sweet

If all you know of Takako Shimura is Wandering Son, you are in for a surprise. Happy-Go-Lucky Days is less about exploring the boundaries of who one is and more about the choices we make and the lack of thought that goes into them. The three short stories that make up the actual titular content do link up in the end, but for the most part this is a collection of unrelated tales about romantic decisions and how they pan out in the short term.

The first story is probably the best. A young divorcee meets a man at a bar and goes home with him. As the days pass, she sees no need to leave and they slowly fall into a relationship. At first it is clearly based only on sex, but as time goes on, they begin to depend upon each other in other ways as well. Although it is open-ended, there's something sort of reassuring about the story that it is hard to describe. The second story is much more bitter, although revealing why would ruin the surprise of the story, and the third is the weakest, about a teacher pondering his sexuality. The stories that follow are not as well put together as the title collection, but the second has an interesting carnality to it, even if we never fully understand the heroine's motives.

All in all, if you like your slice of life to show the sexier side without ever really feeling like reading hentai, Happy-Go-Lucky Days' first volume is a good book to check out. Don't plan on reading it all in one sitting, though - it works best if you pause between servings to really think.
