Twins Ken and Mari and their friend Joe have been constant companions since childhood. Now in their final year of high school, they've grown into young adults with their own hobbies, loves, and even secrets. No matter their differences, though, they share a common bond in their love for movies. But will this bond prove to be strong enough when unresolved feelings and distance threaten to pull this threesome apart? Kine In! collects the existing chapters of this bittersweet story, plus a newly written chapter! Also included are three one-shots where Est Em further explores the bonds of affection that draw friends and lovers of all kinds together.-----Translated by Lea Histake; Edited by April Gutierrez; Lettered by Alexandra Gunawan

Otaku USA
est em's coolly retro art pulls readers in with organic lines, solid blacks, and sparse backgrounds that are just enough to set a scene.

Lots of good things to see here

Let me preface by saying that I dearly love est em’s work, and that’s a double edged sword because it means I have exorbitantly high expectations of her. That said, I was mostly very pleased with this collection. The multi-chapter title story captures the atmosphere of that moment in time when you’re growing up and growing apart from your friends, and ends on the pleasant note that certain relationships don’t have to end.

My favorite story in this volume is The Salvia and the Barber, about two older guys (oyaji moe!) who are lifelong friends that continue to meet up years after one of their wives (and the third in their friendship trio) has died. The story has to do with the words they’ve always left unsaid, so let’s just say that it’s never too late. And like the best stories that stay in your mind after you’ve read them, there are many possible interpretations.

I’ve heard people say that est em’s art style is an acquired taste or that it takes some getting used to, but that’s never been the case for me. There’s a sense of weight and a grounded realism in her character design that makes her characters far more interesting to me than your typical willowy bishounen. And while it’s not especially evident in this particular volume, the way est em draws the male musculature is entrancing.

The text in the book is all large and readable, though that sometimes becomes a detriment when the balloon isn’t quite large enough to fit it comfortably. And with est em’s quirk of not putting pointers on dialogue balloons, sometimes it’s not immediately clear who’s speaking. The book has its flaws, and not every story in this collection is a masterwork - some of them feel a bit lacking in resolution - but when she nails it, she nails it but good.
